Java Applet: ContourAnalyzer.class by Robert T. Kelley
Java 1.3 plugin required
Use: Type in the pitches of a melody to see a contour analysis.
- If you do not know about contour analysis, see Introduction to Post-Functional Music Analysis.
- Use note name plus octave number (e.g. A4) for each pitch in the melody. The octave number should not be less than -1 or greater than 9. For sharps and flats follow the note name with either "-sharp", "-flat", "#", or "b" as is appropriate. All of the following are acceptable and represent the same pitch: "A#4", "A sharp4", "B-flat 4", "Bb4".
- You must separate the pitch names with commas.
- If a pitch is duplicated in the set, each recurrence will be considered slightly higher than each previous occurrence of the pitch.
- A graph of the contour will be shown in black on the graph below the text boxes. A graph of the reduction of the contour will appear in blue superimposed upon the contour graph. The intermediate steps in deriving this reduction (if any) will be shown in light gray.
